Upgrade

Free versions of AccelaStudy allow users to try out all of the features of the application with a subset of the global vocabulary. For our language products, the paid versions of AccelaStudy contain more than 2,100 words in over 60 subject areas. If you enjoy using AccelaStudy Essentials and would like to upgrade to the full version with a lot more vocabulary, you can tap the Upgrade button. This will link you to the iTunes App Store, where you can read the application description and tap the “Buy” button within the App Store if you decide to go ahead with the purchase.

Audio

AccelaStudy has always come packaged with professionally-recorded, high-quality audio files. These files are large and take up a lot of space on the device. While these audio files are part of what makes AccelaStudy great, not all users need or want them, and they make app updates large and slow to install. As of version 3.5.0, the audio files are no longer included with the app itself and require a one-time download from the AccelaStudy Cloud.

  • For those who choose to use AccelaStudy without downloaded audio, AccelaStudy will use one of the great built-in voices that come with iOS.

  • To download the audio, please go to the “Main Menu” and tap “Settings”. Under Settings, please tap on “Audio” to be able to download the audio files.

My Focus

AccelaStudy allows you to customize the words that are displayed in the various study modes such as “Study”, “Flashcards”, “Spaced Repetition”, “Handsfree”, and “Quiz”. This can be accomplished by specifying the words under “My Focus”.

  • Tap the circle on the left of “All Words” if you would like to include all available vocabulary in your study focus.

  • If you would like to focus on specific categories, tap on the circle on the left of “Selected Categories”. Then tap on the “Selected Categories” to select all categories or individual categories.

  • If you have created any study sets, you may also set your focus to a specific study set.

My Study Sets

AccelaStudy allows you to create as many study sets as you’d like to customize your learning experience. Study sets in AccelaStudy are meaningful collections of vocabulary words. You create a study set so you can focus on a particular set of words.

To create a study set, follow these steps:

  1. Start at the Main Menu.

  2. Tap on “My Study Sets” to see your existing study sets. Initially, the message “You have not created any study sets” is shown.

  3. Tap on the “+” icon on the top right corner. This displays the “New Study Set” screen.

  4. Enter the name of your study set and tap the Save button.

  5. Your new study set is now showing on the “Edit Study Set” screen with the message “No words have been added to this study set”.

  6. Tap the “+” icon on the lower left corner. This shows the full vocabulary word list. Instead of adding individual words, you can also tap the folder icon on the lower right corner if you would like to add categories or another study set to your study set.

  7. Tapping on a word will set a checkmark for that word. Tapping again will remove the checkmark.

  8. You may select as many words as you wish. Tap the Save button to save the selected words to your study set.

  9. After tapping Save, you will see the list of words in your study set.

  10. Tap the back arrow on the “Edit Study Set” screen to navigate out to “My Study Sets”.

  11. Once you have created a study set, tap on “My Focus” on the main menu.

  12. Tap on your new study set to tell AccelaStudy you want to study words from this study set.

  13. Tap the “Main Menu” button to choose a study mode such as “Study”, “Flashcards”, “Spaced Repetition”, or “Quiz”.

At this point, all AccelaStudy study modes will use the words in your study set. There are only two limitations to this:

  • Spaced Repetition mode only works with study sets which have more than 5 words.

  • Quiz mode and Audio Quiz mode work only with study sets which have more words than the number of questions in the quiz (10, 20, 30).

In both cases, if the selected study set does not have enough words, AccelaStudy chooses words from the global vocabulary word list.

My Progress

AccelaStudy tracks your learning progress based on your feedback using the “correct” and “incorrect” buttons in Spaced Repetition.

  • Your progress for your specific study sets and categories will be updated as you use Spaced Repetition and displayed under “My Progress”.

  • When you’re looking at the list of study sets or categories on the “My Progress” screen, you may tap on an item to see the progress detail.

  • If you’d like to reset the progress for a specific study set or category, you can swipe your finger from right to left over the item, and tap the “Reset” button.

Options

To access the global options for AccelaStudy, please tap on the “Main Menu”. Then tap on the gear icon on the lower left corner of the “Main Menu”.

  • Under “Options”, you may set the volume for audio or turn the volume off.

  • You can reset all of your progress.

  • You can also specify options for study modes. These options will be discussed in detail for each study mode.

Study

Study cards allow you to learn as you browse through the vocabulary. In Study mode, you can advance to the next study card by swiping your finger across the screen.

  • Each study card displays the word(s) with the primary language on the top and secondary language at the bottom.

  • If you have previously created any study sets, you may tap on the “+” icon on the top right corner to quickly add a word to a study set.

  • You may tap on the audio icon at the lower right corner to replay the audio.

  • You can go to “Options” - “Study Options” to customize the following:

  • Tap on “Display” to specify which language to display on the top and bottom.

  • Tap on “Word Order” to specify alphabetical order or shuffled. If you have set the word order to “Shuffled”, you can shake your phone while in Study mode to reshuffle the cards.

  • Turn “Play on Slide” on or off. This setting controls whether or not the audio is automatically played when you advance to the next card.

  • Tap on “Language” to specify the language for audio.

Spaced Repetition

Spaced repetition is a learning technique pioneered by cognitive psychologists that incorporates increasing intervals of time between subsequent review of previously learned material. This spacing effect refers to the fact that humans more easily remember or learn items in a list when they are studied a few times over a long period of time (“spaced presentation”), rather than studied repeatedly in a short period time (“massed presentation”).

This technique was eventually applied to language learning by Sebastian Leitner and evolved into a spaced repetition learning system based on flashcards. Flashcards are sorted into groups according to how well you know each one in the study set in focus.

AccelaStudy® defines five groups of flashcards:

  • Most Difficult
  • Difficult
  • Average
  • Easy
  • Easiest

In Spaced Repetition mode, all words start out in the Most Difficult group. You are presented with a word and you try to recall the vocabulary displayed on the card. If you succeed, you send the card to the next easiest group. But if you fail, you send it back to the group at the previous level of difficulty. Each succeeding group has a longer period of time before you are required to revisit the cards.

The advantage of this method is that you can focus on the most difficult flashcards, which remain in the first few groups. The result is, ideally, a reduction in the amount of study time needed. Though it is perfectly acceptable to set your study focus to “All Categories”, we recommend you define smaller study sets of approximately 20 - 50 vocabulary words when using Spaced Repetition mode.

  • AccelaStudy tracks your progress based on your feedback using the “correct” and “incorrect” buttons. You can see your learning progress by going to “My Progress” from the main menu.

  • Each spaced repetition card displays the word(s) with the primary language on the top and secondary language at the bottom.

  • If you have previously created any study sets, you may tap on the “+” icon on the top right corner to quickly add a word to a study set.

  • You may tap on the audio icon at the lower right corner to replay the audio.

  • You can go to “Options” - “Spaced Repetition Options” to customize the following:

  • Tap on “Display” to specify which language to display on the top and bottom.

  • Turn “Play on Slide” on or off. This setting controls whether or not the audio is automatically played when you advance to the next card.

Flashcards

This mode allows you to study the vocabulary similar to a traditional flashcard approach. In Flashcards mode, you can advance to the next study card by swiping your finger across the screen.

  • Each flashcard displays the word(s) with the primary language in the front and the secondary language in the back.

  • You can tap on the card to switch between the front and back view of the flashcard.

  • If you have previously created any study sets, you may tap on the “+” icon on the top right corner to quickly add a word to a study set.

  • You may tap on the audio icon at the lower right corner to replay the audio.

  • You can go to “Options” - “Flashcard Options” to customize the following:

  • Tap on “Display” to specify which language to display in the front and back.

  • Turn “Play on Slide” on or off. This setting controls whether or not the audio is automatically played when you advance to the next card.

  • Tap on “Word Order” to specify alphabetical order or shuffled. If you have set the word order to “Shuffled”, you can shake your phone while in Flashcards mode to reshuffle the cards.

Handsfree

Handsfree mode allows you to study vocabulary while driving, jogging, or simply relaxing. Please tap the play button on the screen to start the audio for Handsfree mode.

  • Handsfree will automatically play the audio for the primary language and then the secondary language using a pre-determined audio interval.

  • Handsfree will continue to play even if your device is locked.

  • To stop the audio, tap the stop button.

  • You can go to “Options” - “Handsfree Options” to customize the following:

  • Tap on “Display” to specify which language to hear as primary and secondary.

  • Tap on “Word Order” to specify alphabetical order or shuffled.

  • Tap on the “Interval” slider to set the audio interval.

Quiz and Audio Quiz

Quiz mode allows you to test your knowledge by taking a quiz with 10, 20, or 30 questions.

  • When you complete answering all of the questions, AccelaStudy will display the quiz results with your score.

  • You can also check your score at any time during the quiz by tapping on the “Quiz Complete” button.

  • In Audio quiz, the question will be played as audio as opposed to being displayed on the screen. In order to hear the question again, you can tap on the speaker image.

  • You can go to “Options” - “Quiz Options” to customize the following:

  • Tap on “Display” to specify which language to display as the question and the answers.

  • You can turn “Advance” on or off. If advance is turned off, you will need to swipe your finger across the screen to advance to the next question in Quiz mode.

  • You can turn “Feedback” on or off. If feedback is turned off, AccelaStudy will not provide the correct/incorrect feedback in Quiz mode. You will see the questions you missed in Quiz results.

  • You can specify the number of questions by choosing 10 questions, 20 questions, or 30 questions.
